Some of the best rooms in a house don’t have walls. On this east-side Madison home, the porch is now where the day starts and ends.
Working from plans by Design Coalition, we extended the porch into a new covered porch that wraps the corner of the house. Cedar posts with trimmed faces carry a deep roof, and a tongue-and-groove ceiling makes the space feel finished, like a room. Black powder-coated metal railings keep the view to the street open. There’s room for a table and chairs, and for a few hanging plants.
The part you can’t see matters as much. Each post sits on a steel helical pier, driven deep and sized for the load above it, so the porch stays level through Wisconsin winters. The new roof ties into the house with ice-and-water shield throughout, so the joint between old and new stays dry.
Two years on, the plantings have grown in around it, and the porch looks like it was always part of the house. That’s the goal: work that fits the home and the neighborhood, and makes the house easier to live in every day.
